New Years resolutions - goals for 2011
Happy New Year!
According to Wikipedia, a new year's resolution is "a commitment to a personal goal that an individual makes to a project or the reforming of a habit, often a lifestyle change that is generally interpreted as advantageous." They also explain that "Goal setting involves establishing specific, measurable and time-targeted objectives. Goal setting features as a major component of personal development literature. Goals perceived as realistic are more effective in changing behavior."
I see my goals as specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time-targeted. I am publishing them here because I feel that if I do, the chance that I stick to them and achieve them is higher.
Here are my goals for 2011.
Looking back at 2010 What a year! For me, 2010 was a hard year but full of small achievements! This year has been full of major changes for me and I feel I've moved forward in my career and life as a translator. Here are some of my highlights from a busy year 2010.
Getting ready for Germany, part two
have been so caught up with the translation project that I'm finishing off. I can now see the light at the end of the tunnel so I have a few minutes to keep you up-to-date with where I am. Moving abroad
In about seven weeks, I'm beginning a new stage in my life and my career. I'm packing up from Auckland, New Zealand and moving overseas. Knowing my language combination or a good knowledge of architecture will help you know where I'm going. This is the plan so far.
Translator Business CardsInspired by Corinne McKay's post on translator business cards, I thought I would tell you what I have done. Currently still in uni and not yet a working translator, although I often feel overworked, I don't yet have real business cards made up. What I have done though, is to start developing some basic online.
I've signed up for a page at flavors.me (not an affiliate link) where users can collect information about what they're doing around the Internet. For me, this will be my twitter feed, my posterous blog and possibly my flickr photos, although I'm not sure about them.

This is a joke for esl teachers and grammarians. In high school a lot of people played Magic: the Gathering, a fantasy card game. I never really got into it, partly because I didn't see the point and I had other things to spend my money on. Translation Misconceptions - what gripes do you have?I was talking to someone yesterday who is a fellow bilingual in my language pair and have, like me, lived in my two working cultures. They are someone I know well and I thought that they would have a good idea of what translation involved. However, I soon realised that they had a whole bunch of misconceptions about what translators do.
After the break are three misconceptions that I have heard of recently that are getting on my nerves.
Word CountingOver the last couple of weeks I've had more than my fair amount of trouble with pdfs and word counts. I've been working on a brochure for a German Bundesverband and was told at least four different word counts for the same text.
